Loading ships used to be skilled, organised, well paid work. Men carried the cargo on board by hand, piece by piece, and it took days.

Stacks of coffee, crates of car parts, bales of cotton. All these things were individually carried piece by piece up to ships.

Then a man called Malcolm Mclean had an idea.

What if you did not unpack the lorry at all? What if you just took the whole container off the back of the truck and lifted it straight onto the ship? No unpacking, no repacking, no men carrying sacks.

Now, a job that took a week took a few hours.

Within twenty five years the London docks that had employed tens of thousands were closed.

Nobody working those docks in 1956 believed they were living through their last good decade.

It did not feel like history. It felt like a Tuesday.

Every Single Time, The Same Three Groups Appear.

Group one carries on doing the old job, slightly faster, using the new tool. They are the most confident of the three and they lose everything.

Group three is small, usually unqualified, and almost always underestimated. They ask a different question from everybody else. Not how does this make my work faster, but what can I now do that was impossible before?
